Benmore Dam Waitaki Valley South Island New Zealand

Learn about Benmore Dam in the Waitaki Valley on the South Island of New Zealand and see a short video of this impressive piece of construction.

Benmore Dam and the Benmore power station are located in the Waitaki Valley on the South Island of New Zealand.

Benmore Dam is one of the largest Earth dams on the Southern hemisphere and Benmore power station is New Zealand’s second largest hydro power station.

You can get to Benmore Dam via State Highway 83 from Omarama in the west or from Timaru in the east.

Above Benmore Dam lies Lake Benmore, which has a surface of 74.5 square km, a shoreline of 116 km and under normal maximum level holds 1.5 times as much water as Wellington’s harbor. If you want to enjoy views of Lake Benmore, I highly recommend going for a walk on the Benmore Peninsula Track.

I shot the following video while standing on a viewing platform near Benmore Dam on a sunny day in autumn. If you look closely, you’ll see a few yellow trees in the area as a sign of the beginning of autumn in New Zealand.
