Quantas only offers direct flights between Auckland and Queenstown, between Christchurch and Queenstown, and between Wellington and Auckland.

So to fly from Wellington to Queenstown with Quantas, you’d have to first fly from Wellington to Auckland, and then from Auckland to Queenstown.

Jetstar

Jetstar does not offer direct Wellington Queenstown flights.

Jetstar only offers direct flights between Queenstown and Auckland, between Queenstown and Christchurch, between Wellington and Auckland, and between Wellington and Christchurch.

So to fly from Wellington to Queenstown with Jetstar, you’d have to first fly from Wellington to Auckland and then from Auckland to Queenstown, or from Wellington to Christchurch and then from Christchurch to Queenstown.

The first indirect flight option is similar as the one offered by Quantas.

If you have to take an indirect flight between Wellington and Queenstown, it makes sense to make Christchurch the city to transfer in, so Jetstar indirect flights of going via Christchurch to get from Wellington to Queenstown are much better than the option provided by Quantas.

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand is the only air carrier that offers direct Wellington Queenstown flights through the Air New Zealand Link Network.

However, direct Wellington Queenstown flights are very limited and you need to be fast and or lucky to book one.

If direct Wellington Queenstown flights with Air New Zealand are unavailable or fully booked, you always have the option to fly with Air New Zealand via Christchurch to get from Wellington to Queenstown.

In addition, Air New Zealand offers all of the same indirect flights the other airlines offer, so you have the most choice if you fly with Air New Zealand.

Update:
Pacific Blue has dropped their service (in 2010) between Queenstown and Auckland, so you cannot fly to Queenstown anymore from within New Zealand with Pacific Blue.
