Snow Is Falling In New Zealand

Written on Thursday, 27 May 2010 by NZTravelInsider

Read about the late May 2010 snow fall and cold snap that is currently taking place especially on the South Island of New Zealand.

Today, New Zealand has experienced its first cold snap and dumping of snow of 2010.

Snow has fallen to the ground in Central Otago near Dunedin and is expected to fall down to 300 to 600 meters tonight and tomorrow.

Mount Hutt in Canterbury has also received 40 cm of snow and Porters Pass got 20 cm.

The mountains around Lake Tekapo are currently snow-capped and the Remarkables in Queenstown are also snow-capped.

You can use one of the methods I’ve outlined previously to see whether snow is falling in New Zealand.

It was a very cold day today with temperatures around 5 degrees Celsius on the South Island, and 11 degrees Celsius here in Wellington.

At this time, because the freezing levels have lowered considerably, if you fly into or over the South Island in the next few days, you should enjoy white tops on the mountains.

Up until now, my insights about the best time for snow in New Zealand are working out just fine. Hopefully it remains that way, so that I can also enjoy seeing the “white stuff” when I next visit Queenstown in June.
